Aurora Solar Technologies strengthens scientific team, extends Intellectual Property portfolio and wins customer Research and Development facility order

North Vancouver, Canada, October 20, 2020 – Aurora Solar Technologies Inc. (TSX.V: ACU) (the “Company”) announces the strengthening of the Company’s scientific team and intellectual property portfolio, as well as a product order for use in an existing customers’ solar cell and module R&D activities.

Aurora is pleased to report that the Company recently received an order from an existing customer for a DM-110h for use in their solar cell and module research and development. This system is expected to be used in the development of advanced solar cell designs for use in the customers’ solar panels that are marketed worldwide. (Solar cells are the front-facing electricity-generating parts of solar panels.)

Aurora has also recently strengthened its Research and Development capabilities with the addition of Divya Ananthanarayanan to our team. Ms. Ananthanarayanan conducted her Ph.D. studies on the interaction of infrared light and diffused, textured silicon solar wafers (solar cell raw material), which is the scientific method used by Aurora’s DM family of infrared reflectometry measurement systems.  Her work breaks new ground in this area, and together with Aurora’s Dr. Johnson Wong, Ms. Ananthanarayanan developed a scientific approach that is now applied in the DM product line to increase measurement accuracy and expand our capabilities to measure more critical-to-quality silicon wafer properties in real time, such as emitter dopant “surface concentration”, previously observable only through destructive off-line tests.

The Company is also pleased to announce that the Taiwan Patent Office and the Chinese Patent Office have each allowed patents for the “Mapping of Measurement Data to Production Tool Location and Batch or Time of Processing”, previously granted in the United States as US Patent 10,559,709. This describes Aurora’s proprietary method for intuitive data display and monitoring of the performance of solar cell manufacturing equipment, using measurements of critical-to-quality parameters such as those provided by the Company’s DMTM line of measurement systems. Currently, the Company also has patent families related to its Infrared (IR) measurement technology and to solar cell manufacturing processing. This new patent extends the Company’s portfolio to the field of process visualization and control.

“We are pleased to report on these important developments that build the Company’s technology foundation and capabilities,” said Gordon Deans, Aurora’s Chief Executive Officer. “The upcoming use of our DM products in customer R&D and the strengthening of our technology, scientific team and patent portfolio provide us with the means to continue to build competitive advantage and positioning of our products for use in both current and developing solar cell technologies.”

In addition, the Company has recently delivered a large quantity of DM measurement systems to numerous different customers in China for the first time.  As the Company progresses through the commissioning phase with these products, we expect the full benefits of our DM technology will be recognized by these customers, strengthening the foundation for continued sales and for the introduction of our InsightTM data science product for solar cell production yield optimization.
